How do Christ’s teachings extend to pets?

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

This week, a heart-wrenching but ultimately hopeful story emerged from North Carolina. Over 100 dogs were rescued from a home where they had been held in horrifying conditions—caged tightly, stacked on top of one another, and covered in filth. Many suffered from untreated health issues, matted fur, and trauma.

And yet—God’s light broke through the darkness.

Thanks to the courageous efforts of the SPCA of Wake County and Raleigh Animal Control, these animals have now begun a journey of healing. Volunteers gave them their first taste of fresh air, their first gentle grooming, and likely their first moment of freedom and care. These “spa days” for the dogs may seem small, but they are acts of sacred restoration.

As Christians, we are called to reflect the heart of our Creator, who is “a refuge for the oppressed” (Psalm 9:9). The Bible speaks often of our duty to care for all of God’s creatures. Proverbs 12:10 reminds us: “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” This rescue is a modern-day parable—where compassion triumphs over cruelty, and love redeems what was once discarded.

We are also reminded of Jesus’ words: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). While these words often refer to people, the spirit of Christ’s compassion does not stop at humanity. It reaches every corner of His creation.

May we always be builders of peace and protectors of life—in every form.
